Mountain Medicine weekend
6 - 8th January 2023
Hey guys and gals,
We’re going exploring again! This time to the Cairngorm mountain range in the Eastern Highlands of Scotland. We'll be trudging through snow, hanging off ropes and practicing our medical skills.
Suitable for all medical professionals or trainees including junior doctors, medical students (any year), paramedics, nurses or expedition leaders. We're hoping for snowy slopes and sunny skies. With limited spaces available you'll be well looked after by our crew including expedition doctors, mountain rescue professionals and expedition leaders. The weather is usually amazing at this time of year in the North so dress for the snow.
We meet 10am at Cairngorm Lodge Youth Hostel which makes an amazing base for our training, with plenty of space and a huge drying room. You'll meet the team and get an introduction to high altitude and mountainous environments. After this we dish out your team gear and throw you straight into medical simulation interspersed with tutorials. Late in the evening we get a hearty meal in and usually watch some educational / inspirational videos on the big projector. For the night it's your choice between a warm room or testing your mettle by wild camping in the forest.
Full day of expedition simulation and mountain medicine scenarios on the hills. We’ll set off up the trail practicing both expedition skills and wilderness medicine along the way. Be set for emergency scenarios, avalanche training, improvised stretcher carries, rope and ice axe work. Remember, it can be a challenging climb if there’s lots of snow and ice but we work as a team towards our goal. If all goes well we will summit during sunset and return to the hostel for showers, dinner and games.
This day can be adapted depending on snow conditions an the feelings of the group. Options on the menu include learning about glacial travel, ice axe and crampon technique, practicing making snow shelters, stations on treating traumatic injuries or a mass casualty simulation. After a debrief and prizes we'll let you go. Of course we recommend extending your stay in this fantastic location with a few more days in the hills and Bothies of Scotland

*If you need to hire additional items e.g. ice axe or crampons both Cairngorm Mountain Sports and Ellis Brigham in Aviemore Village offer this.
The cost works out at £260pp with your own transport. Aviemore is the nearest train station and it's a short taxi / bus to the Hostel. If you want to get your University Wilderness Medicine or Emergency Medicine Society involved as a field trip it's a good idea to share a minibus. Or use the UE forum to organise sharing lifts.
