"NOT ALL THOSE WHO WONDER ARE LOST."

Jungle Expedition MEDICINE, Langkawi, Malaysia

23 Apr - 1 May 2022

From £999 self-catered / £1,400 FULLY-INCLUSIVE

This stunning archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea off the coast of Malaysia is classed as a UNESCO world geopark, with a wealth of un-touched primary jungle and un-inhabited islands to explore.  On this two phase trip we start with a three-day trek through the jungle, as we're getting used to the expedition routine, sleeping in our hammocks and navigating the river systems & waterfalls that make this place so stunning.  For the second phase we head out by boat to our deserted island, where you’ll learn the tricks of the trade that turn one of the most inhospitable environments into a joyous place for an adventure. Each day you have practical teaching and simulation on survival techniques as well as treating wilderness medical conditions common to this ecosystem.  From heat illness to snake bites, trauma and evacuating casualties.  And somehow we still leave some time for rest and relaxation.

A two phase trip with plenty of adventure

Day 1 – Touch down in Langkawi International Airport (LGK) and transfer to the hotel where you'll  meet your fellow adventurers and have a chance to refresh yourself after the flight.  Pleasantries over we launch straight into preparing for our trip, with briefings on jungle hazards, kit checks and jungle routine.  Once your questions are answered you'll be free to take a stroll along the beach front as we settle into our palm fringed retreat for the night.

Day 2 – Jungle Phase - Flip flops off and jungle boots donned, we head under the canopy, with a short trek to 'waterfall camp.'  Here we cover camp craft, parang safety and begin to appreciate the joy of jungle travel.  Once you're happy with your camp set up we settle into our hammocks for the night.

Waterfall

Day 3 – Waking up to sounds of the cicadas singing we'll dive straight into jungle medicine scenarios and simulation (possibly after a dip in the jungle pools).  We move camp and navigate up-river to Camp 2, even deeper in the jungle.

Day 4 – Getting used to the routine now we are a well oiled team.  We continue our trek, coming across obstacles and casualties along the way.  By late afternoon we'll be on our way back to civilisation for a good meal and preparation for phase two.

Day 5 – Island Phase - A short boat ride through the islands and we arrive at the little slice of beach we will call home for the next 4 days.  The general routine consists of survival skills tutorials or medical simulation during the day, BBQ suppers and rest & relaxation in the evening.  Scuba diving is optional but highly recommended.

Day 6 – Survival skills (water, fire, shelter, food, rescue)

Day 7 – Scuba diving / survival tutorials / medical simulation

Day 8 – We practice our 'leave no trace' rule and vacate the island as we found it.  The group has a chance to re-gather by the pool and we lay on a luxurious celebration dinner.

Day 9 - Pack up and reflect on an experience you'll never forget.  Optional visit to Kilim Geoforest Nature Park featuring mangrove forests, lagoons & beaches, with river tours and floating restaurant

Sustainability is something we are passionate about having seen first-hand the damage humans are doing to the environments we explore.  We behave responsibility as we travel and strive to strike the balance between humans and nature.   All our cleaning fluids are biologically degradable so they don't contaminate the soil or erode the coral, and we practice a 'leave no trace' policy ensuring we leave every camp site as we found it.

days
test your medical skills under the rain forest canopy

Difficulty:  With many nights spent under the rainforest canopy and far from civilisation, this is one of our most challenging expeditions.  You’ll be prepared well during the lake phase to cope with everything the forest (and our instructors) can throw at you during the jungle phase.  As they say, “the jungle is neutral,” and you'll have to learn to work with it in order to survive.

Suitability: As with all our courses we don't discriminate based on experience or profession.  Our courses are suitable for anyone with an interest in wilderness medicine, and it's clear the interaction between people from all backgrounds makes the learning experience all the more rich.  Whether you're a layman, expedition guide, medical elective student, doctor, nurse, paramedic or other allied health professional; as long as you have an adventurous soul we can cater for all appetites.  FYI we also offer non-medical survival courses too.

And of course there's all the fantastic learning you'd expect from a world class course, with fire-making, shelter building, water collection and daily medical casualty simulation

Example Itinerary

* will be tailored based on the skills and experience of the cohort. International flights not included.

Day 1 – Welcome to the island of Borneo!  Gather at the hotel and meet your fellow explorers in nervous anticipation of what lies ahead.  We’ll brief you on what to expect, how to stay safe and impart the little gems of wisdom that will make your time in the jungle so much more enjoyable.  After a brief rucksack rummage we’ll dish out some gear and you’re off for the night.

Day 2 – Lake Phase – We head off early for a foray into the jungle.  After a dip in the stream we’ll inflate our pack rafts and cruise across a freshwater lake towards the river mouth.  A short journey upstream and we pick out a camp site.  Here you’ll get an introduction into camp craft, water hygiene and an opportunity to test out your gear.

Day 3 – Navigation under the canopy is challenging to say the least.  Your experienced jungle guides will show you the ropes and you’ll navigate yourselves back to the hotel for a good meal to set us up for the next phase ahead.

Day 4 – Jungle Phase – Our overland transfer takes us deep into the jungle driving down old logging roads to the end of the track.  On foot from here we discover our pace as we make our way towards Camp 1.   If you’re brave enough you can make the leap off the waterfall into the plunge pool below for a wild bath.

Day 5 – And we’re getting onto the swing of things as we efficiently pack up camp and move off towards Camp 2.  This will be our base for two nights as we run lessons and scenarios in wilderness & expedition medicine and bushcraft from a natural platform overlooking this isolated waterfall.  As you climb behind the falls for your evening shower it’s hard not to become overwhelmed at the beauty of a place no other humans venture.

Day 6 – Tutorials & wilderness medicine simulation

Day 7 – By now you’re becoming masters of jungle travel, surviving is becoming easier and you can really enjoy the hike towards Camp 3.  Here we are at the top of a large waterfall characterised by interesting geological rock formations, where the river dives off deep into caves of smooth rock and emerges at some unknown point downstream.

Day 8 – Not for the faint hearted we abseil off the top of this 90 ft waterfall and follow the track towards our transport back to our hotel ready for a warm shower and hearty celebratory meal.

Day 9 – After an experience like this you’ll welcome the opportunity for some R&R.  Choose to relax by the pool, spend some time paddle boarding  or head out on the boat for a scuba diving excursion.  The option is yours.
