How to get started with Expedition and Wilderness Medicine
Meet our Course Director - Dr Daniel Grace
Dr Daniel Grace is a portfolio GP in South Wales and an experienced wilderness medic. He has worked as an expedition medic in numerous countries including Fiji, Slovenia, and the Canadian Yukon.
Dan is passionate about teaching and regularly teaches on wilderness medicine courses around the UK. He has taught on all the Unique Expeditions UK courses since they started.
Dan will be leading our Wales course alongside a group of awesome instructors. If you're lucky you might also see Finley, Dan's dog, around camp as well.
Here's an example of some of the scenarios we practice on the course.
Itinerary
The itinerary for the week will be tailored according to the cohort so may vary but you can expect plenty of teaching, both of medical and outdoor skills, with time to relax in the evenings around the campfire. Day 1: By 11am we meet and greet our instructors and fellow teammates before familiarising ourselves with our surroundings and basecamp layout. After lunch you’ll be taken through some essential expedition skills, water purification techniques, fire and shelter, along with the important aspects of campcraft and rope work. In the evening there will be time to get to know your teammates around the firepit as we dish out gear and get a hearty meal in. Day 2: Mountain Medicine - A full day of expedition simulation, GPS navigation and wilderness medicine scenarios. We’ll set off on the trail practicing both expedition skills and wilderness medicine along the way. Be ready for emergency scenarios, improvised stretcher carries, and ropework along the journey. In the evening we fire up the generator for a tutorial on Expedition Preparation and Planning. Day 3: Jungle Medicine – We start under the teaching tarp with our “jungle top-tips” tutorial and an overview of the tropical medicine you’re likely to see. In the afternoon it’s time for Expedition Skills & Parang Safety followed by more medical scenarios and practicals. As the sun is setting we dive into a med kit rummage to learn the secrets of pulling together a field medical kit. Day 4: We try our hand at building shelters for different environments, practice our radio comms skills and learn about the realities of working in remote places. From 3pm onwards we light up the BBQ and spend the evening resting our bodies and brains (participation in games and festivities is optional). Day 5: Time for one last major casualty simulation followed by some fun (and educational) games. After a late lunch we practice our leave-no-trace rule as we pack up camp and head back to civilisation for around 15:00.
We do lots of medical scenarios in small groups to gets some hands-on practice.

All our locations are rural and beautiful so you may want to come down a night early to get set up if you're coming far. If you're a student check with your University Wilderness Medical Society to see if they're planning on coming or taking a minibus. If you don't have wheels pop a post in the forum to make contact with someone who may offer you a lift. The trip is self-catered to keep your costs down. Itinerary
The itinerary for the course will be tailored according to the cohort and the weather, so may vary, but you can expect plenty of teaching, time outdoors, and games in the evening. Day 1: We meet 10am at Cairngorm Lodge Youth Hostel which makes an amazing base for our training, with plenty of space and a huge drying room. You'll meet the team and get an introduction to high altitude and mountainous environments. After this we dish out your team gear and throw you straight into medical simulation interspersed with tutorials. Late in the evening we get a hearty meal in and usually watch some educational / inspirational videos on the big projector. For the night it's your choice between a warm room or testing your mettle by wild camping in the forest. Day 2: Full day of expedition simulation and mountain medicine scenarios on the hills. We’ll set off up the trail practicing both expedition skills and wilderness medicine along the way. Be set for emergency scenarios, avalanche training, improvised stretcher carries, rope and ice axe work. Remember, it can be a challenging climb if there’s lots of snow and ice but we work as a team towards our goal. If all goes well we will summit during sunset and return to the hostel for showers, dinner and games. Day 3: This day can be adapted depending on snow conditions an the feelings of the group. Options on the menu include learning about glacial travel, ice axe and crampon technique, practicing making snow shelters, stations on treating traumatic injuries or a mass casualty simulation. After a debrief and prizes we'll let you go. Of course we recommend extending your stay in this fantastic location with a few more days in the hills and Bothies of Scotland
